Members of the Horatio Alger Association belong to a distinguished group of individuals who have encountered a diverse range of life experiences. Much like the characters in stories by Horatio Alger, Jr., these individuals typically started life in economically challenging circumstances or overcame significant challenges later in life. Despite facing adversities, and some might argue, because of them, they have exhibited exceptional diligence in working towards success and the realization of their dreams.

Members are dedicated civic, corporate, and cultural leaders who demonstrate individual initiative and a commitment to excellence, as exemplified by remarkable achievements accomplished through hard work, honesty, self-reliance, and perseverance over adversity. They have made outstanding contributions in the fields of science, medicine, business, entertainment, athletics, law, and jurisprudence, religion, arts as well as education.
