Michael Bublé
Class of 2024
Michael Bublé's journey from a humble, tight-knit family in Burnaby, British Columbia, to global stardom is a testament to the value of perseverance, family support, and hard work. Born into a family with Italian and Croatian roots, Michael's upbringing was filled with love, music, and a strong work ethic.
Historically, Michael's family were fishermen. This legacy taught him the value of hard work from an early age. As the son of a fisherman, Michael worked on his father’s fishing boats, taking on various jobs, including crewman, skiff-man, and cook. These formative experiences taught him the importance of integrity, teamwork, and respect for others—values that helped anchor him throughout his career.
“When you show them by your actions who you are, it’s hard for them not to reciprocate.”
CAREER
Michael's family played a truly instrumental role in shaping his life and career. His grandfather, a plumber, introduced him to jazz and big band music when he was young. It was a world Michael immediately fell in love with. When he decided around the age of 16 that he wanted to be an entertainer, his parents were unwavering in their support. His grandfather would do free plumbing work at a night club to secure Michael stage time, while his parents would bring all extended family and friends to fill the place and cheer him on. It was indeed a family affair, and Michael knew whether he succeeded or failed, he always had his family’s support.
“How crazy for us to think that with just love and blind belief, we could somehow love each other into this position.”
With his parents’ faith in him, he was able to face all the adversity ahead of him without giving up on his dream. One of the most persistent battles Michael faced was the industry's skepticism about his style of music. Despite his incredible talent, agencies repeatedly told him his sound wouldn’t make any money, that it just wasn’t going to happen for him. But he was so passionate about music and felt in his bones that people would connect with his style once they experience his authenticity.
“I kept thinking, I know that I’m unique. I know that what I’m doing is special. I know that it is.”
His hard work and perseverance paid off when influential figures like former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and his wife, Mila, heard him sing and took an interest in his music. This connection ultimately introduced him to legendary producer David Foster, who breathed life into Michael’s dream. However, nothing in the early days of his career came easy. He toured tirelessly, performing in small venues across 50 countries, often starting from scratch where no one knew his name. Whether it was a Marriott bar in Sweden or a small room in Poland, Michael embraced every opportunity, knowing that each performance was a chance to prove himself. The dedication to his craft and his willingness to start over again and again have shaped him into the artist he is today, and eventually, it paid off. Michael became a beloved figure in the music world, not only for his talent but also for the genuine love and hard work that has defined his career.
WHAT I’VE LEARNED
One of Michael’s biggest lessons throughout his journey to stardom has been how important his support system was to his success. He often speaks of how he wouldn’t be where he is today without the sacrifices of his family and the encouragement of those who saw his potential when others did not.
“I'm sitting here today because all of those people who gave so much of themselves because they believed in me. And without them, there'd be no possibility of me ever having the opportunity to be sitting here honoured like this today.”
Michael's journey is an example of resilience, passion, and the power of hard work, showing that with determination and the support of others, dreams can come true. His journey mirrors the core values of the Horatio Alger Association of Canada, which celebrates those who have triumphed over adversity through resilience and determination. His story of overcoming skepticism and starting over countless times exemplifies the spirit of perseverance that makes him a worthy addition to the Association.
Through his struggles he found not only success but also humility, learning to appreciate every milestone along the way. His message to others is clear: success cannot be achieved alone. It takes a supportive community, hard work, and the determination to keep going, even when the odds seem against you. As Michael reflects on his life and career, he is proud to be part of a tradition that values family, integrity, and lifting others up, ensuring that the next generation has the strength and support they need to achieve even greater things.
