The Horatio Alger Association: Honouring Extraordinary Canadians
The Horatio Alger Association of Canada, established in 2009, strives to inspire individuals across the country to realize their full potential, ultimately strengthening Canadian society. The Association, the Canadian affiliate of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, pays tribute to the legacy of Horatio Alger, Jr., a renowned 19th-century author whose stories of perseverance, integrity and overcoming adversity remain timeless.
Empowering Canadian Youth: The Horatio Alger Scholarship Program
The Association has two primary mandates. Firstly, we honour extraordinary Canadians who have demonstrated unyielding determination and achieved remarkable success through the International Horatio Alger Award. Each year, we proudly recognize and offer lifetime membership to these exceptional individuals, who have journeyed from humble beginnings to significant accomplishments. Their inspirational stories echo the indomitable spirit of Horatio Alger, Jr.
Secondly, we are devoted to bolstering the aspirations of young Canadians through our extensive scholarship program. Since our inception in 2012, we have awarded over $16 million in scholarships to more than 2000 deserving students from coast to coast. Our scholarships are more than just financial grants—they provide comprehensive support inclusive of financial aid counselling, internships, mental health resources, and mentorship opportunities from our Association members.
Investing in Future Leaders : The Impact of the Horatio Alger Association
Through the generosity of Horatio Alger Members, we’ve established an endowment, currently valued at $24.5 million, allowing us to broaden our financial assistance. As a result, students from all Canadian provinces and territories are eligible for scholarships of up to $10,000 through the Horatio Alger Canadian Scholarship Program.
As we continue to inspire and enable the next generation of leaders, we’re confident that the shared stories and experiences of our members will resonate deeply with our scholars, providing them with the motivation to carve their own paths to success. By championing the values of perseverance, integrity and determination, the Horatio Alger Association continues its mission of instilling hope and fostering potential across the country.
