Horatio Alger National Entrepreneurial Scholarships

10 $10,000 Scholarships Awarded
Funded through the generosity of the Members of the Horatio Alger Association of Canada

The National Entrepreneurial Scholarships are awarded to eligible students across all provinces and territories in Canada.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for the Horatio Alger National Entrepreneurial Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled full-time as a high school grade 11 or first-year CEGEP student in Canada
  • Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university
  • Prove critical financial need ($65,000 or less annual net income per family is required)
  • Demonstrate desire and ability to be entrepreneurial in a chosen field
  • Be involved in co-curricular and community service activities
  • Display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity
  • Maintain a minimum grade percentage of 70
  • Be Canadian citizens

Applicants for both the Entrepreneurial and Canadian Scholarships are required to fill out only ONE application.  The Association will use the one application to consider you for all programs for which you are eligible.

The university application for current Grade 11 students is now closed and will open for Grade 11 students on December 1, 2023.

Horatio Alger Canadian Scholarships

The Canadian Scholarships are awarded to eligible students across all provinces and territories in Canada.

The Fairfax Financial Holdings Entrance Awards program is a partnership of Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited (whose Chairman and CEO is Canadian Association Member, Prem Watsa) and the Horatio Alger Association of Canada.  Through this partnership, some 45 scholarships will be awarded to selected youth residing in Canada who face significant financial obstacles to help them achieve a Canadian college or university diploma or degree.

Eligibility

  • plan to enroll full-time at one of the eligible colleges/universities*
  • have graduated from high school or CEGEP within 18 months prior to applying
  • demonstrate financial need based on government student loan assessment from their home province
  • demonstrate academic readiness: minimum grade percentage of 80
  • Canadian citizenship or permanent residency

 

*Eligible colleges and universities are:

Alberta: University of Calgary, SAIT Polytechnic

British Columbia: Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia, University of Victoria, Capilano University, Douglas College

Manitoba: University of Manitoba, Red River College, Assiniboine Community College

Newfoundland and Labrador: Memorial University, College of the North Atlantic

Nova Scotia: Dalhousie University

Ontario: University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, Georgian College, Seneca College, Sheridan College

Quebec: McGill University, Laval University, O’Sullivan College of Montreal

Horatio Alger Vocational & Technical Education Scholarships

25 $3,000 Scholarships funded through the generosity of the Members of the Horatio Alger Association of Canada

The Vocational & Technical Education Scholarships are awarded to eligible students across all provinces and territories in Canada.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Horatio Alger Vocational and Technical Education Scholarship Program, an applicant must:

  • Have completed high school (or earned high school equivalency credential) by July 1
  • Be enrolled in a 3 years or less career or technical degree/certificate program at a not-for-profit institution in Fall 2023 that will lead to employment
  • Demonstrated critical financial need ($65,000 or less annual net income per family is required)
  • Demonstrated perseverance in overcoming adversity
  • Be under the age of 35
  • Be a Canadian citizen

The application for the Horatio Alger Vocational & Technical Education Scholarship is open from March 15 until June 15, 2023.

Indigenous Achievement Scholarships brought to you by Indspire

Indigenous Achievement Scholarships

5 $10,000 Horatio Alger Indigenous Achievement Scholarships awarded in partnership with Indspire

The Horatio Alger Indigenous Achievement Scholarship is for Indigenous students starting a four-year post-secondary program in the Fall. While enrolled in post-secondary program, students must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA and a full-time course load to receive the renewed support each year.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for the Indigenous Achievement Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • First Nation (status and non-status), Inuit and Métis high school students
  • Enrolled full-time in a high school within Canada
  • Plan to pursue a four-year post-secondary program within Canada full-time in the fall after award
  • Valid Social Insurance Number
